Sleep habits worth discussing

Track your sleep pattern and know when persistent problems deserve evaluation.

Look for a pattern

Keep a short record of bedtime, waking time, nighttime awakenings, naps, caffeine use, and how you feel during the day. Note work schedules, travel, and anything that changed around the time the problem began.

Support a regular routine

A consistent waking and sleeping schedule, a quiet and dark sleeping environment, and a relaxing wind-down period can support sleep. Caffeine late in the day and distractions in bed may make sleep harder. Changes should fit your health and daily responsibilities.

Mention persistent or concerning symptoms

Tell a clinician if poor sleep continues, affects daily functioning, or is accompanied by loud snoring or witnessed pauses in breathing. An evaluation may identify the need for additional assessment rather than a simple sleep-habit adjustment.

Avoid unsafe driving

If you are too sleepy to drive or operate equipment safely, stop that activity and arrange a safer option. At a routine visit, ask what further assessment may be appropriate and how to follow up if the sleep problem continues. This page does not offer a sleep diagnosis or a treatment purchase.

Emergency symptoms?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a routine appointment, phone call back or email reply.
