Cholesterol results and your prevention visit

Look at results as part of your overall health picture.

General health education · Reviewed by Nicholas O. Atudonyang, MD, Medical Director, on October 18, 2026. Not a diagnosis or an individual care plan.

A result needs context

A cholesterol panel is used alongside factors such as age, family history, smoking, blood pressure, and other health conditions. A single flagged number does not explain the whole picture. Discuss what the result means for you.

Bring prior results if available

Comparing results over time can make the discussion more useful. If tests were performed elsewhere, ask how to share them securely and confirm that the office has received them. Avoid relying on a cropped screenshot without the test date or units.

Ask about the next step

Useful questions include: Why was this test ordered? Do I need to prepare for another test? Which habits should I focus on? When should the result be checked again? Testing frequency and goals should be individualized.

Make prevention practical

Discuss changes that fit your daily life, and arrange follow-up when recommended. This guide is educational, not a cardiovascular risk calculation or an individualized care plan. For new chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or stroke-like symptoms, seek emergency care.

Emergency symptoms?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a routine appointment, phone call back or email reply.
